People talk about a passport card and why would you need one? The passport card has very limited use. It can only be used for land and sea, and only with the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean. Most people don’t get a passport card, they opt for the actual passport book. The passport card can not be used for international travel.

 

What is the Difference Between a Passport and a Visa?

The passport serves two purposes: to regain entry to the country of citizenship (i.e. the United States) and is a requirement by many countries to gain entry to the country you are visiting. A travel visa is an official government document that temporarily authorizes you to be in the country you are visiting.

 

How Long Does it Take to Get a Passport?

After you submit the application and required documents, under normal conditions, it takes 6-8 weeks to get your passport. You can also have your application rushed through to get it faster.

If you need a passport within a couple weeks, or even in 24 hours, then you can use a service like Rush My Passport. I’ve personally used the 24-hour service. The process was straightforward and got my passport quick. Use only if you have to, because it is much more expensive.

 

How Much is a Passport?

What other passport requirements do I need?

For a lost passport, you first need to report that you lost it. Use the DS-64 (Statement Regarding Lost or Stolen Passport) before you apply for a renewal passport. This step is very important and must be done. If you don’t submit this beforehand, it will take longer for you to get your new passport.
